There is inspiration everywhere I look. From the marmite jar on the table, through the aubergines in the garden, to beautiful servals in the grass alongside a river bed, there is always beauty, and I feel led to get all these visual images down onto the canvas. It is all about looking at the world with new eyes - seeing the reflection of the marmite jar on the knife, or the subtle curve of the shadow behind a leopards ear. A trip to the local junk yard will throw up a beautifully weathered table top or a tarnished kettle, a walk in the local nature reserve on an evening will inspire me to paint golden light and lengthening shadows. It is all about filling the well, to make space in your life for contemplation and observation, to quieten the discursive mind and shut down the filters which discounts the everyday.
So if you are looking for inspiration too, then just open your eyes and see. Here is an exercise you might wish to try. Sit still, close your eyes and allow your senses tune in to your world. And then at the end of it, open your eyes and look at the world with new eyes.
First let your mind be free of any concern or occupation
Let the mind fall still and come to rest within
Be aware of where you are now
Feel the touch of your feet on the ground
The weight of the body on the chair
Feel the touch of the clothes on the skin
And the play of air on your face and hands
Taste
Smell
Be fully here
Now be aware of hearing
Let the sounds be received and let them rise and fall without comment or judgement of any kind
With the body completely relaxed, let the hearing run right out of the furthest and gentlest sounds, embracing all.
Simply rest in this great awareness for a few moments. Open your eyes and look at the world.
Be inspired
